How to Prevent Frozen Pipes This Winter

Why Pipes Freeze

When outdoor temperatures drop below freezing, water inside uninsulated pipes can freeze and expand. This pressure causes pipes to crack or burst, leading to significant water damage inside your home. The pipes most at risk are those in unheated spaces like garages, basements, crawl spaces, and exterior walls.

How to Prevent Freezing

Most frozen pipe situations are preventable. Here are the most effective steps to take before winter arrives.

Insulate Exposed Pipes

Pipe insulation sleeves are inexpensive and easy to install. Focus on pipes in unheated areas of your home. Even a basic foam sleeve can make a big difference when temperatures drop overnight.

Let Faucets Drip

On extremely cold nights, allow faucets connected to vulnerable pipes to drip slowly. Moving water is much less likely to freeze than still water. This simple step can save you from a very costly repair.

Keep Interior Temperatures Consistent

Avoid setting your thermostat too low at night or when you leave the house. A consistent indoor temperature above 55 degrees Fahrenheit helps protect pipes throughout the home.

Seal Gaps and Cracks

Cold air entering through gaps in your foundation or walls can accelerate freezing. Use caulk or spray foam to seal any openings near pipes.

What to Do If a Pipe Freezes

If you turn on a faucet and get little or no water, a pipe may already be frozen. Do not use an open flame to thaw it. Apply gentle heat using a heating pad or hair dryer, starting from the faucet end and working backward. If the pipe has burst, call a licensed plumber immediately.
